How to teach the causes of the Industrial Revolution?

Updated: Oct 2, 2022

What would you teach to your students if you wanted them to understand the causes of the Industrial Revolution? We wanted to know what experts and teachers around the world thought about this before we designed our learning objectives.

We designed a short survey and circulated it widely using social media and professional associations. We received answers from both academics and secondary schools teachers from a range of European countries and America.

We asked teachers and researchers to rank the importance of different factors in their teaching of the causes of the Industrial Revolution. The overwhelming conclusion was that the demographic story, and the Malthusian trap were the key factors to focus on, while industrial development before the Industrial Revolution, the geography of natural endowments and Empire were the second most cited. These results informed our approach to the pedagogical content of the game.
